<p>Demographic processes and health outcomes are highly gendered in India. At the same time, studies on the impact of gender on demography and health issues are scarce and the impact of demographic changes on gender is nearly nonexistent. Mere recognition of the gender issues does not provide policy guidance to make appropriate changes in the programmes. This calls for innovative methods to understand demographic changes, health scenario and gender systems and also a critical analysis of various public interventions. India is also experiencing rapid demographic changes in recent years which will have definite implications for demographic pattern, gender system, health progress and governmental policies and programmes. There are several policy and programmatic interventions to generate conducive demographic and health changes through gender equity.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This volume brings together contributions from scholars on demographic changes, gender and health system and health policies and programmes in India. <p><strong>K.S. James</strong> is Professor, Population Research Centre, Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore. He holds his doctoral degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was also a visiting fellow at the Harvard Centre for Population and Development, Harvard University in 2000, INED, Paris in 2007 and London School of Economics, UK in 2009. His current areas of interest are population and health in relation to socio-economic development. He is also a co-editor of the book Demographic Change, Health Inequality and Human Development in India (2004). He has published numerous research papers in the area of demography and health.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Arvind Pandey</strong> is the Director of National Institute of Medical Statistics, ICMR, New Delhi. Prior to this, he was a professor at the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai. He has several awards and honours to his credit. He was a Rockefeller Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA. He is currently the President of the Indian Association for the Study of Population and Indian Society for Medical Statistics. He is also a fellow of the Indian Society of Medical Statistics, Royal Statistical Society, UK, and has received Fellow award of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He has published number of books, monographs and research papers in demography and statistics. His areas of specialisation are in bio-statistics, epidemiology and population studies.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Dhananjay W. Bansod</strong> is an Assistant Professor at the Population Research Centre, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. He holds a Ph.D degree from International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai and Masters in Geography from Amravati University, Maharashtra. His area of research includes ageing, HIV/AIDS and health related issues. He has published several research papers in the area of population and health.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Lekha Subaiya</strong> is an Assistant Professor at the Population Research Centre, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. Prior to joining ISEC, she was working at the ORC Macro, USA and has been associated with the Demographic and Health Surveys. She holds Ph.D in Sociology, University of Maryland, USA and Masters in Sociology from the same university. Her area of research includes family dynamics, ageing issues and gender.
